Free Grant Money for Parents!

Hi PACs, Please see information below:

I work within MCFD as a Family Consultant, supporting low-income families in our community. In partnership with the United Way, we are working to increase awareness of, and access to, federal and provincial grants for RESPs. Research indicates that children with as little as $500 in an RESP account are 50% more likely to graduate from high school. In addition, post-secondary education is an effective way to increase a person’s future earning capacity, decreasing the likelihood that they will experience poverty. Families can apply for up to $3200 of grant money for RESPs for their children, but currently, the federal grant (Canada Learning Bond) is only accessed by approximately 30% of eligible families in Kamloops, while the provincial grant (BC Training and Education Savings grant) has a take-up rate of approximately 17% in our community. I was wondering if there was a way that the DPAC could support the sharing of this information throughout our district, so that parents can understand what is available and how to access it. There are options for parents to get these grants without paying any fees for opening or maintaining the account, and requiring no contributions from parents. Free money!

Let me know if you think there could be an opportunity for us to share this information directly with DPAC at a future meeting, or if you have any other ideas for how to best ‘spread the word.’

Thanks in advance,

Rebecca Cain
